It already does that. From pilot-link debconf:

  Which communication port to use with the Palm?
  None, ttyS0, ttyS1, ttyS2, ttyS3, ircomm0, ttyUSB0, ttyUSB1 

You can chose "None" and let udev create whatever you want for you.
