When using my normal login/password, that is perfectly working on
another tty managed by getty or KDM, I get the following in
/var/log/auth.log:

Feb 20 14:01:42 bateleur qingy[29753]: Authentication failure: wrong password 
for user 'rabbit' (UID 1000)
Feb 20 14:01:47 bateleur qingy[29753]: (pam_unix) authentication failure; 
logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty=tty9 ruser= rhost=  user=rabbit


qingy was installed with the following line in inittab:

6:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/qingy tty6 -pld -f /dev/fb0
