hi

this bug was discussed upstream in
http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-dev-eng/2007-February/049059.html
the problem is that, nowadays, there are too many screensavers and
powermanagement gizmos arounds to reasonably support each and any of
them specifically; the best thing would be to use a freedesktop spec , see
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.wm-spec/1357
but the situation is AFAIK still unclear

possibly next version of MPlayer will contain this solution
http://bugzilla.mplayerhq.hu/show_bug.cgi?id=251
you may want to try the patch that is in that PR
http://www.eleves.ens.fr/home/george/info/prg/mplayer-20050304-noidle.diff

(unfortunately Debian is in freeze now, and it is not possible
to get that patch in etch)
