Package: bzip2
Version: 1.0.3-6
Severity: wishlist

bzip2, like other streaming compression types (eg, bzip) can recompse
data with multiple concated compressed chunks of data.

Eg, cat *.txt.bz2 > master.txt.bz2 ; bzcat master.txt.bz2

SMP and multicore systems are not fully utilized when one solitary
thread of the process is running. Compression of a 40gb file could take
far less time on these systems if each core/cpu compressed (say the
window size?) their own portion of the data, and concated it behind the
scenes to the output file. Granted, it would take more memory to, but
the benifits on sufficently powerfull systems often outweigh this.
