Also attached during the install was a memory stick drive (appears as USB storage). Partitioning in the installer correctly labelled the HDD as sda and the MS as sdb. On boot (kernel=2.6.18-3-686, bootloader=grub) the system labelled MS as sda (even when there was no MS in the drive).
