I think this is due to a workaround we had for GTK+ versions lower than 2.10.4, in which setting a non-default colormap (an RGBA colormap for translucency) would cause a reset of the current GTK+ theme for the entire application.
The workaround was to save the current style before applying the new colormap. This seems to have gone wrong on your system, but i can't tell any details from this information. Please try to run it inside gdb with the argument "--g-fatal-warnings", and proceed as described on http://bmpx.beep-media-player.org/site/FAQ#Reproduce_the_bug We won't need this workaround for 0.40 anymore, which is due end of March approx., but anyway please try as described above, we might release a 0.36.2in the meanwhile.
