For this to happen, it would be nice if xscreensaver could be split
into two packages, one providing the actual xscreensaver
infrastructure and one with the hacks (bug 344568).

The space savings is not worth the effort, or the cost of making the packaging setup even more complicated than it already is.

Current sizes of the xscreensaver 5.01 packages (on Red Hat 9, sorry, it's what I have easy access to right now):

          747 KB xscreensaver-base-5.01-1.i386.rpm
        3208 KB xscreensaver-extras-5.01-1.i386.rpm
        3518 KB xscreensaver-gl-extras-5.01-1.i386.rpm

The "xscreensaver-base" package contains not only xscreensaver, but a bunch of common infrastructure required for the hacks themselves to function (xscreensaver-text, xscreensaver-getimage, app-defaults, etc.)

Splitting the xscreensaver-base package into two packages so that you could leave out the saver itself would save around 400 KB.

That's less than 5% of the size of the total package. It's hardly worth the effort!

If you're really concerned about tiny size savings like that, there are more effective approaches: for example, making it possible for all those xml files to be gzipped. Or making sure that unused localizations don't get installed.
