Well, you pegged it, the /dev/bus/usb device was not root:nut, and
upgrading nut-usb to the version with the fixed udev rules file and
replugging fixed that, and I can use newhidups.

glad to hear that.

I'll live this bug opened to dig the path way (ie being able to
specify a device), but it will need some libusb change imho.
