I have the same problem here. Some infos: the bugs only occours when there is a collection to open at startup, i.e. if the "file" parameter in "$HOME/.config/gcstar/GCstar.conf" is set. Cleaning by hand the parameter allows me to run gcstar and open the collection using the File menu: I have to do this every time I restart gcstar. I don't know if this make difference, but my collections have been imported from gcfilm files. You can try to reproduce the bug using the attached .gcs file and setting the "File" parameter accordingly.
One last thing: I guess Marco is Italian like me, anyway forcing locale to "C" doesn't seem to solve the bug, so it might be just a coincidence. Bye. -- Matteo Beniamino
