Isn't this pretty much what you get in the Nautilus context menu when you right click a file? First the "Open with Foo" for your default application, and then "Open with Bar", "Open with Baz", etc. for the rest of the recommended applications. If you want to change the default applications this is easy to do from the properties for a the file, which only list the recommended applications.
