After some testing and debugging i found the problem. It was misconfigured mysql - utf settings in my.cnf. Because of this data was utf8-double encoded.

So problem was only in my one configuration. Anyway some docs about this user-based issue would be fine. Something like:

"If you have problem with infinite login, try to alter table... If it helps, probably you have bad encoding in database."

Thanks for the report.

I'm having some trouble reproducing it, though, and my web searches don't
seem to explain the issue too well either. Could you please check

- Which version of mysql are you using, 4.1 or 5.0?

5 from etch, but same was with 4.1 from sarge.

- Do you have a CNAME or something for your web server, so that the real hostname is not in the URL?

DNS is ok, include reverse.

- Which browser are you using, and does the bug occur with others as well?

FF2 from sid, but same problem (but with previous server installation) was with latest opera too.

- Is this specific to libapache2-mod-fastcgi, or does it occur with eg.
  mod_perl2 too?

mod_perl2 too

I haven't been able to test with libapache2-mod-fastcgi yet, as there's
no amd64 package available and my testing platform is 64-bit. Guess I'll
have to set up a new i386 Xen installation for that.

I hope you didn't loose much time with this.

Regards,

J.
