You only mention installing insserv. Did you activate it too? If not, it should not affect the boot at all. Please send the output from "ls /etc/rcS ; ls /etc/rc3" to allow me to guess what might be wrong with the boot. I've never seen the problem you are describing myself, so I have no idea what can be wrong.
