The glob gnu* is the official pattern to match the GNU Hurd system in
the system component of a GNU triple component host identifier.

GNU/Linux systems have "linux-gnu". No other system has gnu in its
system component name as far as I know, certainly not at the
beginning.

As the names are created by the script config.guess which is under
control of the GNU project, this is not going to change accidentially.
It has been this way ever since.

I am not sure what part of libtool requires porting. When I was
actively porting, sometimes bugs crept into libtool, but the libtool
support for the GNU Hurd was always complete as far as I know.
Today's porter will be able to say more.
