But, just because you aren't able to confirm this license information isn't positive evidence that debian/copyright is incorrect; debian/copyright may reflect private correspondence with the upstream. The release team will give the maintainer the benefit of the doubt here when there is no evidence of debian/copyright being in conflict with other copyright statements from the authors.
