I had a look at the logs, but I couldn't discover anything out of the
ordinary. I suggest you contact the upstream author of gnome-screensaver
and see if he has any suggestions. 

I found an old bug similar to yours in the GNOME Bugzilla, I suggest you
reopen it and add a description of this problem.

You could also try the experimental package of gnome-screensaver 2.16,
but I think it requires an upgrade to GTK+ 2.10.

It uses ~/Pictures, but it can be changed if you
edit /usr/share/applications/screensavers/personal-slideshow.desktop
