the g-p-m icon is not shown in my notification area, although 'Always display icon' is selected in the 'Notification Area' section of the Preferences. In gconf-editor I find the key '/apps/gnome-power-manager/display_icon_policy' set to 'always' as well. To make the icon appear I have to start gnome-power-manager-preferences from the menu, select somthing *different* than 'Always display icon' in the 'General' tab (i.e. 'Never display icon' or 'Only display when battery present')and then switch back to 'Always display icon'.
