I've had good success with s2disk (package uswsusp) rather than suspend2. I understand they are different implementations of the idea, with suspend2 requiring a rather intrusive kernel patch whereas the kernel infrastructure for s2disk is already inside the kernel (from 2.6.17 or thereabouts).
