Tried it again, with the expert install (to a 1gb flash card). The first time I
tried it, I also
selected the desktop package; it failed halfway through the software selection
section, without a
useful message. Examination of the disk revealed that it was, predictably, full
(filelight
indicated over 55% of the space used was apt package cache!?!).

Tried it again, with just the basics & pppd selected. This time it went through
(I further
installed minimal kde desktop manually with success); after copying sprint chat
script & peer
connect scripts over (and loading usbserial), it worked! (albeit slowly). I've
had to patch the
kernel of my Uburntu(sp!?) installation to get reasonable performance
(similar/bidirectionally to
http://www.junxion.com/opensource/linux_highspeed_usbserial.html :: I've seen
this mentioned on
the kernel mailing lists, but apparently nobody's bothered to add it yet).
