Indeed, I came to the same conclusions and reproduced this lack of
support.
Totem uses the "playbin" element in GStreamer, and Rhythmbox is moving
internally to use this element too, so I presume support for playbin in
Rhythmbox would solve your problem.
Upstream already has an old discussion about "mms://" support, I
suggest you suggest to the upstream discussion at:
