That is very strange indeed. Unfortunately, I can't be of much help, here... Isn't the same happening for iceape (which, by the way, doesn't set LD_LIBRARY_PATH but is still fine...) ?
I tried a lot, but I do not found the problem. When I changed a little bit an Makefile, the rebuilded files are different. My guess is that it depends on order of execution Makefile snippets, like export:: and export-idl:: And/or due to subsecond resolution of file stamps. The difference between amd64 and kfreebsd-i386 build logs from http://buildd.debian.org/ and http://experimental.ftbfs.de starts at line 16962/16980 make[4]: Entering directory `/build/buildd/xulrunner-1.8.0.9/toolkit/xre' /build/buildd/xulrunner-1.8.0.9/config/nsinstall -R -m 644 ... /build/buildd/xulrunner-1.8.0.9/config/nsinstall -R -m 644 ... +nsINativeAppSupport.idl +../../dist/bin/xpidl -m header -w -I. -I../../dist/idl -o _xpidlgen/nsINativeAppSupport nsINativeAppSupport.idl +nsIXULAppInfo.idl +../../dist/bin/xpidl -m header -w -I. -I../../dist/idl -o _xpidlgen/nsIXULAppInfo nsIXULAppInfo.idl +nsIXULRuntime.idl +../../dist/bin/xpidl -m header -w -I. -I../../dist/idl -o _xpidlgen/nsIXULRuntime nsIXULRuntime.idl /build/buildd/xulrunner-1.8.0.9/config/nsinstall -R -m 644 ...
