It's a completely orthogonal network configuration system offering configuration via a GUI with dynamic detection of which interface should be active rather than integrating with the standard network configuration system. In this case it looks like both Network Manager and NIS were functioning roughly as designed (though Network Manager could be smarter about what it does if it sees an existing network configuration). -- "You grabbed my hand and we fell into it, like a daydream - or a fever."
