Uh, right. I don't know what the debian policy says about this, but I 
have the impression that "use debhelper" is usually recommended.

Perhaps those two lines needs to be removed, then?

Just for the record, I'm not the maintainer, I'm not even a DD. However, 
I think this question needs to be posed to the maintainer, whom I hope 
will tune in soon. I'll defer the patch meanwhile.
