It doesn't happen to all the .xls files, only the ones I have received. So probably there is something special in the files, that makes OOo open
them in writer.

It sometimes happens that files with .xls extension are actually html or csv files. Such files may be created by some internet download process. These files are plain text so try and open the problem files with a simple text editor such as gedit, vi or whatever, and see what happens - if it is text then report here the first few lines is enough. Also try rename the file to end with ".csv" and then try to open in calc.
