I'm guessing the actual playback problems are caused by bugs in mmssrc from gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, a GStreamer modules that seems to receive far to little love... These problems are only affect mms:// streams, and I'm not sure if it's possible to sort them out from other embedded asf/wmv media. The best solution would of course be if the problems in mmssrc was fixed, but nothing has happened so far.
