Hi,
This bug is not restricted to VNC. If a 8-bit Xnest session is started,
then any program using libcairo 1.2.4 launched within that session will
crash with something similar to the following:
cpalmer:~$ gqview
Creating GQview dir:/home/cpalmer/.gqview
Creating GQview dir:/home/cpalmer/.gqview/collections
Creating GQview dir:/home/cpalmer/.gqview/thumbnails
Creating GQview dir:/home/cpalmer/.gqview/metadata
Error: Cairo does not yet support the requested image format:

Alpha mask: 0x00000000
Red mask: 0x00000000
Green mask: 0x00000000
Blue mask: 0x00000000
