The latest 2.6.18 Debian kernel (2.6.18+5) doesn't completely boot on my
machine, there's a problem with the initrd (fails to mount proc and sys,
then quits to BusyBox prompt). However, reverting to my hand-configured
2.6.18 - rtorrent functions perfectly.

To configure 2.6.19, I copied my 2.6.18 config, made oldconfig and
selected the appropriate new options (SATA drivers mostly). I can attach
kernel configs if you think it will help.
