After looking at it again, I think that was my fault. All the fonts that
had mode 0400 were in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/commercial whereas
msttcorefonts are in /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts.

Unfortunately, I can't remember where that "commercial" directory came from.

root's umask is 0022, so that shouldn't be the source of the problem.
