Out of curiosity, is there anything holding this feature back? I haven't had any problems with it yet.

I'd like to see this feature enabled too. I use other operating systems
to connect to my debian boxes and use screen. 256 color mode has been
supported by my stuff for a long while, and I'm recompiling the debian
package just to enable my use of it.
