Sorry, I might have misunderstood something. Do you simply have a problem with the default behavior, that the cursor is restored to the last position, or something else? For me, this work as promised in gedit. I disagree, other GNOME applications, such as Evince also saves the position in the file. (Well, at least the version in experimental does this).
