I've installed your scripts in /tmp/michelle, and the only line I changed
was to add 'HOME=/tmp/michelle' before the 2 ls. When run, your script seems
to behave correctly and always shows me 9 items.

I think that it cannot be a mc bug, because all that mc does is an 'execve'.
One possible explanation is different environment variables (check with
'env') or different shopts.

I think this bug should be reassigned to bash.
