I remember doing it, but I don't remember why. I can only assume that someone pointed it out to me that it should be changed, but I'm annoyed with myself that I didn't write that persons name in the Changelog.
Looking over my emails from that time, I notice that someone actually told me about it in person. Probably Bernhard Reiter, Werner Koch, or someone else from Germany. If whois.denic.de works well now, then we should definitely change back.
