I've rewritten the entire curl support already, as part of the reworking to make hpodder work with multiple download threads. The code is done and I'm just testing it out now. It should show up in sid in the next few days.
It now redirects curl's output, both stdout and stderr, to a file. It will then check if the file has any data, and if so, display it to stdout along with a message indicating what file it's for. In the meantime, you can probably make a ~/.hpodder/curlrc file to disable the meters as well.
