If it is of any help, my i386 testing system with Epson CX5400 attached also refuses to scan. Sane-find-scanner finds it, but scanimage -L does not. The system log shows:
usb 3-1: usbfs: interface 1 claimed by usblp while 'xsane' sets config #1 Rmmod usblp did not seem to help. I have installed and pinned an earlier version of libsane which has fixed things for now, but it would be nice if it could be fixed properly.
