I had a look at this problem again and surfed through the python-dev ML archives.
Since the current development effort is in a kind of flux there doesn't seem to be a lot of bugfixing going on right now. Watching a particular thread I found the following patches though.

Applying those two patches to the current source in sid seemed to fix my problems.
I applied them, installed the module and did a /etc/init.d/apache2 reload. No 500 error with viewcvs.


Mind you, it works for me and I am not sure if it will break other stuff, but looking at the current status of the module it might be a good idea to apply them anyway.
