alsa-base does not load modules. It leaves that up to the hotplug and/or discover packages. You might try installing those packages. If neither of them detects your hardware, simply add

  snd_cs4236

to /etc/modules and the module will be loaded during the boot sequence.


Apparently alsaconf isn't changing the right thing then because
it says it changes /etc/modprobe.d/sound and /etc/modprobe.conf.
Does Debian's init script automatically recreate these on restart?

I think this could be the problem then.  I will attempt a reboot
with this to see if this corrects it.
