It works fine on my box, so I'm going to need some more details about your
setup:

  - What kind of burner do you have? (IDE, SATA, SCSI, USB)
  - Is DMA enable for your drive? 
    (check with "hdparm -d /dev/hda" where /dev/hda is your burner)
  - What are you burning when it takes 100% of the CPU? 
    (Data CDs, Audio CDs, Data DVDs, Video DVDs, ISOs)
  - Or is it the same regardless of what you try to burn?

Another thing to try is to use another front-end to wodim and see if the
same problem happens.  I suggest you try "gnomebaker".
