There's even one more failure earlier: In one of the latex runs, it wants to include eps files (e.g. bar.eps), but cannot find them (there's no eps version of that files). I think it's dvipdfm that has this problem. This bug is very strange: It's easily reproducible with pbuilder, even if I log into the chroot and build manually with dpkg-buildpackage. However, if I call the Makefile targets manually, the do not fail. Oh, wait. I think I never tried to bypass dpkg-buildpackage as the first thing, only after it had failed once. Maybe it's an issue of not enough runs, or the order of dependencies? I also noticed that the package as packed in orig.tar.gz and diff.gz is *not* clean, it ships generated files in the doc directory. Maybe there's a connection...
