I recommend posting in the gallery forums at http://gallery.menalto.com/forum/44 I checked my G1 config file and I have $gallery->app->comments_anonymous = "no" although from what I read in the admin interface, setting $gallery->app->comments_enabled = "no"; should completely disable the comment functionality.
