If I try to scan two pages with 75dpi, I get an IO error:

$ scanimage --resolution 75 --format pnm --progress --batch
Scanning -1 pages, incrementing by 1, numbering from 1
Scanning page 1
Scanned page 1. (scanner status = 5)
Scanning page 2
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O
Scanned page 2. (scanner status = 9)

Attached files document saned -d and tcpdump again.

Also, I noticed #236805. Maybe there's a relationship. Or this is
a bug with the HP backend, in which case please reassign.

I am compiling an hplip version with HPAIO_DEBUG set, maybe that
will show something.
