The following file:

$ cat toto-fr.xml
<para lang="fr"><uri>http://test</uri></para>

when compiled, produces in PDF:
-=-=-=
http: //test
-=-=-=

The following file:

$ cat toto-en.xml
<para lang="en"><uri>http://test</uri></para>

when compiled, produces in PDF:
-=-=-=
http://test
-=-=-=

Note the extra space in the French language version.
The same happens with <ulink> and <systemitem role="url">.
Probably a side-effect of French typography packages in LaTeX.
