Turns out that you'll get the box by taking 2 apples and saving the replay.
To reproduce, in the doom level, take the first two apples on your
left before saving the replay.

Sorry for the very long delay, that one went thru the cracks.

I've tested your scenario and the short answer is, sometimes.

Long answer, 3 cases:
1) If you haven't taken an apple yet, replay will work no problem.
2) You've taken an apple but haven't done much yet¹, you'll get an
"Illegal Instruction" error at one point and xmoto will crash.
2) You've taken an apple AND you've done enough¹ to meet the infamous box.

I here attach 2 replays:
crash1.rpl: Box
crash3.rpl: Illegal Instruction + crash

¹ I haven't spotted what triggers the 2nd category yet.
