According to the author, the problem with the slowness should be fixed in version 0.5.0, which I'm planning to upload shortly. 290180 should also be fixed by the new release. I'll close this bug with that version -- if you still feel that that version is unsuitable for inclusion in a stable release, please file another bug or reopen this one.
