By vanilla, do you mean the stock Debian packages or building your own?
Because I still can't duplicate this.

wanderer:/root# uname -a
Linux wanderer 2.6.18-1-686 #1 SMP Sat Oct 21 17:21:28 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux
wanderer:/root# env COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l openafs-modules-2.6.18\* | tail -1
ii openafs-modules-2.6.18-1-686 1.4.2-2+2.6.18-3
            AFS distributed filesystem kernel module
wanderer:/root# /etc/init.d/openafs-client force-start
Starting AFS services: openafs afsd.
afsd: All AFS daemons started.
wanderer:/root# ls /afs/ir/users
a/ c/ e/ g/ i/ k/ m/ o/ q/ s/ u/ w/ y/
b/ d/ f/ h/ j/ l/ n/ p/ r/ t/ v/ x/ z/

The module package was built with m-a -t auto-build openafs, no special
options or anything, from:

wanderer:/root# env COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l openafs-modules-source | tail -1
ii openafs-modules-source 1.4.2-2
AFS distributed filesystem kernel module source

I haven't upgraded this system to the -2 kernel yet and can try that if
you think that might be the difference. What's the exact version of the
kernel you're using?
