Neither the progress bar nor F2 do anything during boot. (The
debiansplash theme at least claims that F2 will switch to verbose mode.
It doesn't.)

During shut down, the progress bar works. Well, sorta. If I've ssh'd
into the box and run reboot, then it works well. If I pick the reboot
option from the gdm menu, then the system switches to the text console
and tries to draw the progress bar over that (rather than the real
backround). The result is decidedly weird and unhelpful.

A few things to keep in mind:

* Are you running Splashy from initramfs? initramfs is "experimental"
and a few things don't work well, pressing F2 while Splashy is running
from initramfs is one of those things that do not work correctly yet
(the kernel's keyboard mapping has not been loaded)
* The theme you are using has <textbox>
...
<textbox>
       <!-- whether you want the textbox always
       shown or no. If no, it will be shown only on error,
       see autoverboseonerror -->
       <enable>yes</enable>
...

If that's enabled, then the textbox should at least open when you
press F2 (unless Splashy is using 100% of the CPU and you are pressing
F2 too fast for it to handle the events).

* when you run Splashy in test mode, are you able to press F2?
/sbin/splashy test. Press ESC to exit.

Let me know these answers. I'd also suggest that you try the latest
release of Splashy, 0.2.1. That fixes a number of bugs, and adds very
minimal new features. It's mostly a bug-fix release.

We are working on Splashy 0.4.x and that will have plenty of new stuff.
