I have also this problem, but looking a little further I discovered a
very similar with mplayer.
I think it's a problem related to libdv somehow.
I have a .avi containing dv. If I play it with xine it works, since it
uses ffmpeg. When using mplayer without options, mplayer tries to use
libdv. See this mplayer console output extract:

If in mplayer I use -vfm ffmpeg, this crash doesn't happen and playback
works.

The program 'kino' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

In general, trying to play any dv file or stream results in a crash
unless you use the ffmpeg.
So with all this information, my bets are that is a libdv fault. So
please consider reassignid this bug or in other case I appreciate
instructions to contrast this or getting to further tracks.
