Sending Debian bugs upstream is the maintainers job. Obviously we
disagree as to whether the error message is misleading, so you probably
won't be doing that too soon. Since you won't acknowledge there's any bug to
fix, I've tagged it "wontfix". That way other users know the point is
contentious, as per the Debian Social Contract:
3. We will not hide problems
4. Our priorities are our users and free software
