It's not that the other monospace fonts are not usable anymore.

Somewhere in the "Debian font system" exist aliases for default monospace, 
serif and sans serif fonts (which appear under "Serif" "Sans Serif" 
and "Monospace" on font selection dialogs of X applications). These aliases 
used to point to Vera or Dejavu fonts (I think).

As the monospace font in ttf-georgewilliams is simply called "Monospace", it 
takes over the default alias and as this font does not display nicely 
(especially at lower size) this somehow "breaks" the display of some 
applications.

Thus, you should IMHO rename this font to another thing that the 
generic "Monospace" name.
