I will and report.  In the meantime, I let you know that:

- I do not use nautilus at X startup, but from the command line, usually
  with `nautilus -n &'
- I run X on a vnc server one Debian box, using it from a vnc client on
  a second Debian box
- nautilus has worked well for me for maybe a month; recently, I had a
  lot of problems with the X server probably because of xorg updates,
  which I solved by adjusting the font paths in xorg.conf; then I
  restarted the server as I used to, and everything is now working as
  before, apart from nautilus
- the behaviour is not easily reproducible: the first time nautilus
  works for half a minute, the next ones for few seconds
