I have just been preparing a similar patch for another package (where there were no DFSG problems), but I'm not sure the approach works for this case, because you would need non-DFSG code in order to build the package (specifically, the headers for libmp3lame, which even if they are not non-DFSG themselves are in a non-free package).

I suppose the relevant part of sox could itself be split into another (non-free) package and itself dlopened, but this is getting nasty.

Suggestions? Maybe it's easier than I think...
