Ok, then HAL seems to do the right thing. Maybe you installed a program, like gnome-mount, which overrides these settings from within the Gnome desktop session. If you use gnome-mount, you can directly manipulate the mount options from within nautilus (Right click on the drive/partition, Settings, Volume/Drive).
